HSBC Credit Card Rewards

The HSBC credit card rewards program provides a colourful rewards program to match popular options on the market. While HSBC's current range of credit cards isn't as large as some other financial institutions, the World's Local Bank still provides competitive options on the Aussie credit card scene.

The HSBC Rewards Plus program is automatically included for both gold and platinum credit cards. While each credit card has its own features and appropriate fee structure to match, the rewards program is largely comparable between the two.

The HSBC Gold credit card comes with free travel insurance, an interest free period on purchases and various other benefits for its $99 fee. For $199, you can access the HSBC Platinum credit card (as long as you meet the $75,000p.a earning requirement), and this allows you such privileges as concierge services, golf course specials, insurance and interest free days.

Earning points is structured the same under each card with a current ratio of one point per $1 spent, and bonus points are accumulated at the same rate of double (or occasionally triple) points with each card. Points expire after 36 months, so bear that in mind if you plan to save up for one of the bigger redemptions.

The range of bonus partners is decent, and while you would not normally be using these businesses every day, it does present an opportunity to earn extra points every now and again. There's also the popular option of points plus pay to allow you to access rewards sooner.

The only real difference from an rewards credit card perspective is the slightly higher cap on points for the platinum card, and the 'Unlimited Rewards' option. This allows Platinum credit card holders the ability to choose their own reward, which HSBC will then allocate to a number of points for redemption purposes.

The range of rewards is comparable to other programs on the market, but is not among the largest out there. There is still a good variety of rewards to choose from, and the main area where this program loses points is in its travel options.

Currently you cannot swap HSBC Rewards Plus points for any airline rewards programs, and the travel section of the rewards catalogue is currently lacking in our opinion. However, you can access a variety of discounts both locally and abroad simply by using your HSBC credit card. It's worth checking out the available discounts if you're considering applying for this credit card.

The HSBC Rewards Plus program still provides decent value, and there's no doubt this program will continue to develop in the future. Check out our Rewards Program Tips to learn the tricks on maximising the benefits of your rewards credit card.
